SUMMARY:Kaleidoscope - Marcia Ballou at the James Library
DESCRIPTION:Artist Marcia Ballou—Kaleidoscope\nOPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY\, MAY 10\, 2024 | 6:00-8:00 PM\nON VIEW FRIDAY\, MAY 10TH THROUGH SATURDAY\, JUNE 15\, 2024\nSPONSORED BY THE MARSHFIELD CULTURAL COUNCIL\, A LOCAL AGENCY SUPPORTED BY THE MASS CULTURAL COUNCIL\, A STATE AGENCY.\nINSPIRATION\nOn a sparkling summer day\, I was sitting on a bench in my field enjoying the bright light and beautiful summer flowers when a dance of nature appeared before my eyes. A swarm of dragonflies was diving\, circling and chasing each other\, their wings sparkling in the sunlight. And then Monarch butterflies appeared\, many of them\, floating into the scene and joining the dance. It was enchanting. This scene is held in my memory as a treasure. It is a scene I paint\, always trying to portray the feeling I had: joy. \nA KALEIDOSCOPE. \nCollage is my medium. I use a palette of painted papers\, cloth\, paints\, and threads. The process is slow\, and I employ deliberate and spontaneous applications. I create colorful gestures and intuitive patterns with paint for atmosphere and then assemble papers\, cloth\, and threads with either acrylic mediums or hand stitches. They are put together like a jigsaw puzzle. The compositions are enlivened by the unexpected combinations of material and shapes. And then sometimes a realistic painting of a favorite creature appears against the abstract dance of color. The patterns always seem to create blossoms of texture on the surface of the finished piece. My goal is to evoke joy.

SUMMARY:DIG Joe Caruso\, Jennifer Liston Munson\, Christine Palamidessi and Marsha Odabashian
DESCRIPTION:May 12 – August 11\, 2024\nReception: May 12\, 2024\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nDig recalls traditions\, events\, and customs across a range of cultures. It values\, preserves and calls attention to what came before so we can learn from the past as we cope with the present and prepare for the future. \nDig remembers\, recognizes\, uncovers\, unearths\, resurrects and validates personal memories\, past events\, or current practices. Using a wide range of interesting materials in their creative processes\, the four artists in this exhibition explore the taken-for-granted\, the ordinary and the passed-by. The artists transform their subject matter into something out of the ordinary as they remind us of what makes us human. \nShown: Joe Caruso\, Prosciutta\, 2023\nClay\, glaze\, acrylic\, and epoxy

SUMMARY:"Young Black Woman - Old White Man"
DESCRIPTION:Young Black Woman | Old White Man\nCurated by James Burke\nOn View May 30 thru July 13\nSouth Shore Art Center is excited to present Young Black Woman | Old White Man in our Bancroft Gallery from May 30 through July 13\, 2024. Curated by James Burke\, this exhibition will examine how race\, gender\, and age informs an individual’s worldview and creative response. The Art Center will host an opening reception on Thursday\, May 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.; admission is open to the public and free of charge.\nThe work featured in Young Black Woman | Old White Man is big and bold\, but more importantly it speaks directly\, and personally\, to the ongoing racial crisis. The two featured artists – Devyn Casey and James Burke – represent the titular voices. The artists met virtually during the pandemic. Jim saw Devyn’s work posted on a friend’s Facebook page and was incredibly moved by it. He reached out and shared some of his own work. They have been friends ever since. Devyn and Jim both have a lot in common: big families\, love for the arts\, and similar senses of humor. But they are not the same color\, and they have vastly different experiences on being American. They both have been painting about those experiences and thought it would be powerful to showcase their different experiences and viewpoints around global issues.\n\nOpening Reception:\nThursday\, May 30\, 6-8 pm
