SUMMARY:Layers - Photographs by Lynn Bratley at The James Library
DESCRIPTION:The James Library presents\nLayers\nPhotographs by Lynn Bratley\nShow runs from September 4th through October 10th \n   Massachusetts artist Lynn Bratley creates contemplative images rooted in close observation of the natural world. Her work focuses primarily on water and sky\, exploring reflection\, light\, movement\, and the layered beauty found in quiet moments of attention. \n“I practice meditative photography and focus primarily on water and sky\,” says Bratley. “I live near the Charles River\, one of my places for quiet observation. Here are abundant layers: surface reflections and ice; turtles\, fish and rocks below; birds\, clouds\, solar circles and the moon above.” \nUsing both her iPhone mini 13 and a Lumix F28 Panasonic camera\, Bratley captures fleeting moments that invite viewers into a reflective and immersive visual experience. “The best camera is the one that I have with me\,” she notes\, emphasizing the immediacy and accessibility of her creative process.

SUMMARY:Copley Society of Art Juried Members Show: Fantastical Realities
DESCRIPTION:The Copley Society of Art presents\nJuried Members Show: Fantastical Realitie\nFantastical Realities explores the junction between imagination and lived experience. It considers how artists construct worlds that blur boundaries between what is real and what is invented. Co|So invites you to venture past the familiar and into incredible\, transformed\, or dream-like spaces. \nArtists were encouraged to interpret this theme broadly\, from surreal landscapes and legendary narratives to quiet distortions of everyday environments. In uncertain and rapidly changing times\, imagined realities create a space for reflection\, critique\, escape\, or possibility. This exhibition\, juried by Michael Rose\, invites viewers to experience a new reality\, one shaped through artistic vision. \n

SUMMARY:"Be Intentional" at The James Library
DESCRIPTION:Be Intentional is a juried exhibition of artwork by the Massachusetts chapter of the National Association of Women Artists. The exhibition is curated by Danielle Drees\, PhD\, author of Spectators: Feminist Performance and Practice. Enjoy a reading and talk with Drees on Friday\, October 9th from 4-6pm. \nBe Intentional brings together artists whose practices reflect deeply personal and socially engaged perspectives. Through painting\, sculpture\, mixed media\, photography\, and other forms\, the exhibition explores the power of conscious artistic expression in a complex and rapidly changing world. From Mass NAWA\, “Being intentional starts with clarity and specificity. All artists are political and must accept responsibility. Being intentional also means being open about your life’s goals\, which requires using emotional intelligence to confront everything society might throw at you – and we know it’s a lot during our time!” \nThe exhibition highlights the role of artists not only as creators\, but also as observers\, advocates\, and participants in contemporary cultural dialogue. The works on view invite audiences to consider how intention shapes both artistic practice and daily life\, encouraging reflection on identity\, responsibility\, resilience\, and connection. \nFounded in 1889\, the National Association of Women Artists is one of the oldest professional women’s art organizations in the United States\, dedicated to supporting women artists and promoting excellence in the visual arts.

SUMMARY:Interpreting the Natural: Contemporary Visions of Scholars’ Rocks
DESCRIPTION:The Duxbury Art Center present \nInterpreting the Natural:\nContemporary Visions of Scholars’ Rocks\nSeptember 20\, 2026 – January 17\, 2027\nReception: Sunday\, September 20\, 2026\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm \n\nGuest Curator\, Donna Dodson\, brings together ten artists whose\npractices engage with the ancient Chinese tradition of appreciating\nnaturally occurring stones as vessels of contemplation\, metaphor\, and\nimaginative space. The exhibition explores how today’s artists\nreinterpret the spirit of scholars’ rocks through a range of materials\,\nscales\, and conceptual approaches. \nRather than replicating historical forms\, the featured works consider how nature is shaped; physically\, culturally\, and spiritually. Some artists emphasize geological presence and raw materiality\, while others evoke symbolic landscapes\, cosmology\, or interior states. Together\, these contemporary responses extend a centuries-old dialogue between art and nature\, inviting\nviewers to slow down and recognize the power of the organic world to\nprompt reflection and wonder. This exhibition offers a fresh perspective on an enduring artistic lineage\, bridging tradition and innovation. \nParticipating artists\nChristopher Frost\, Kate Gilbert\, Danielle Krcmar\,\nLisa Tang Liu\, Kathy Della Lucia\, Andy Moerlein\, Wen-hao Tien\, Alice\nWu\, Yu-Wev Wu\, Qhanzhou (Jack) Zhao \n\n

SUMMARY:"Common Thread"
DESCRIPTION:   Savage Godfrey Gallery presents\n“Common Thread”\n  \nAs we move into the colder months\, we gravitate toward comfort and coziness. That’s what Common Thread is bringing to the Gallery this fall. Common Thread explores the art of handwork–stitching\, quilting\, woodworking– by three distinct artists Marcia Ballou\, Mia Cross\, and Laura Petrovich-Cheney. Their vibrant works evoke a sense of lightness and familiarity\, coming together on the Gallery walls to create a warm\, inviting space for the fall season. The opening reception will be on Friday\, September 25th from 6-8 pm. The artists will be in attendance and the public is welcome. \nMarcia Ballou is a collage and stitched-fiber artist inspired by color\, light\, and the natural world. Through spontaneous and deliberate appliqué\, she combines unexpected colors\, shapes\, and textures to create joyful compositions. This is the second collaboration with Ballou and the Savage Godfrey Gallery\, the first was an exhibition at Boston Children’s Hospital’s Mini Art Museum titled PLAY in 2023. In 2025 Ballou earned two “Popular Prizes” for her mixed-media and fiber work from national exhibits at the North River Arts Society and Duxbury Art Association in 2026. Ballou is a graduate of Mills College\, CA. She creates and resides in Marshfield\, MA. \nMia Cross is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting\, printmaking\, sculpture\, sewing\, and murals. Inspired by color\, the human figure\, nature\, and everyday moments\, her work blends classical techniques with the craft and whimsy of folk art. Building on a vast portfolio of murals\, Cross (in collaboration with the Savage Godfrey Gallery) created “The Car that Went Far” a two-wall illustrated mural and coloring book for the Boston Children’s Hospital Travel Vaccine Clinic. Cross graduated from Boston University with a BFA in Painting and Sculpture and is based in Providence\, RI. \nLaura Petrovich-Cheney is a sculptor who transforms salvaged architectural wood into quilt-inspired works exploring home\, memory\, loss\, and renewal. Drawing on her background in fashion design\, she incorporates traditions of pattern making and quilt construction while preserving the weathered histories of her materials. Based in Marblehead\, MA\, Petrovich-Cheney has exhibited nationally. Her solo exhibition\, The Shape of Repair: Patchwork in Wood\, is currently on view at UNC Asheville in NC \nTitle image \n\n\n\n\nLaura Petrovich-Cheney\, Nessum Dorma\, Found wood\, 36 x 36 inches \n\n\n\n\nMia Cross\, The Shadow and the Stitch\, Oil on canvas\, 20 x 38 inches \n\n\n\n\nMarcia Ballou\, Friendship\, 2026\, Stitched fiber\, 40 x 30 inches \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
