SUMMARY:Interpreting the Natural: Contemporary Visions of Scholars’ Rocks
DESCRIPTION:The Duxbury Art Center present \nInterpreting the Natural:\nContemporary Visions of Scholars’ Rocks\nSeptember 20\, 2026 – January 17\, 2027\nReception: Sunday\, September 20\, 2026\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm \n\nGuest Curator\, Donna Dodson\, brings together ten artists whose\npractices engage with the ancient Chinese tradition of appreciating\nnaturally occurring stones as vessels of contemplation\, metaphor\, and\nimaginative space. The exhibition explores how today’s artists\nreinterpret the spirit of scholars’ rocks through a range of materials\,\nscales\, and conceptual approaches. \nRather than replicating historical forms\, the featured works consider how nature is shaped; physically\, culturally\, and spiritually. Some artists emphasize geological presence and raw materiality\, while others evoke symbolic landscapes\, cosmology\, or interior states. Together\, these contemporary responses extend a centuries-old dialogue between art and nature\, inviting\nviewers to slow down and recognize the power of the organic world to\nprompt reflection and wonder. This exhibition offers a fresh perspective on an enduring artistic lineage\, bridging tradition and innovation. \nParticipating artists\nChristopher Frost\, Kate Gilbert\, Danielle Krcmar\,\nLisa Tang Liu\, Kathy Della Lucia\, Andy Moerlein\, Wen-hao Tien\, Alice\nWu\, Yu-Wev Wu\, Qhanzhou (Jack) Zhao \n\n

SUMMARY:"Common Thread"
DESCRIPTION:   Savage Godfrey Gallery presents\n“Common Thread”\n  \nAs we move into the colder months\, we gravitate toward comfort and coziness. That’s what Common Thread is bringing to the Gallery this fall. Common Thread explores the art of handwork–stitching\, quilting\, woodworking– by three distinct artists Marcia Ballou\, Mia Cross\, and Laura Petrovich-Cheney. Their vibrant works evoke a sense of lightness and familiarity\, coming together on the Gallery walls to create a warm\, inviting space for the fall season. The opening reception will be on Friday\, September 25th from 6-8 pm. The artists will be in attendance and the public is welcome. \nMarcia Ballou is a collage and stitched-fiber artist inspired by color\, light\, and the natural world. Through spontaneous and deliberate appliqué\, she combines unexpected colors\, shapes\, and textures to create joyful compositions. This is the second collaboration with Ballou and the Savage Godfrey Gallery\, the first was an exhibition at Boston Children’s Hospital’s Mini Art Museum titled PLAY in 2023. In 2025 Ballou earned two “Popular Prizes” for her mixed-media and fiber work from national exhibits at the North River Arts Society and Duxbury Art Association in 2026. Ballou is a graduate of Mills College\, CA. She creates and resides in Marshfield\, MA. \nMia Cross is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting\, printmaking\, sculpture\, sewing\, and murals. Inspired by color\, the human figure\, nature\, and everyday moments\, her work blends classical techniques with the craft and whimsy of folk art. Building on a vast portfolio of murals\, Cross (in collaboration with the Savage Godfrey Gallery) created “The Car that Went Far” a two-wall illustrated mural and coloring book for the Boston Children’s Hospital Travel Vaccine Clinic. Cross graduated from Boston University with a BFA in Painting and Sculpture and is based in Providence\, RI. \nLaura Petrovich-Cheney is a sculptor who transforms salvaged architectural wood into quilt-inspired works exploring home\, memory\, loss\, and renewal. Drawing on her background in fashion design\, she incorporates traditions of pattern making and quilt construction while preserving the weathered histories of her materials. Based in Marblehead\, MA\, Petrovich-Cheney has exhibited nationally. Her solo exhibition\, The Shape of Repair: Patchwork in Wood\, is currently on view at UNC Asheville in NC \nTitle image \n\n\n\n\nLaura Petrovich-Cheney\, Nessum Dorma\, Found wood\, 36 x 36 inches \n\n\n\n\nMia Cross\, The Shadow and the Stitch\, Oil on canvas\, 20 x 38 inches \n\n\n\n\nMarcia Ballou\, Friendship\, 2026\, Stitched fiber\, 40 x 30 inches \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Beneath the Surface
DESCRIPTION:The Duxbury Art Museum presents\nBeneath the Surface\nBeneath the Surface: Artists and NSRWA Reveal the True Nature of Our Waters\nOctober 11 – November 13\, 2026 \n\nFrom the scenic banks of the North and South Rivers\, the water may appear calm\nand untouched\, but beneath the surface lies a story of environmental stress and\nresilience. This exhibition brings together diverse artistic perspectives to explore\nthe hidden challenges facing South Shore waterways\, including historic mill dams\,\ndeclining water quality\, reduced water quantity\, and the effects of climate\nchange. \nThe works reveal how dams fragment rivers and block fish migration\, how human\ndemand and impervious surfaces strain groundwater\, and how runoff and\nbacterial spikes can harm shellfish beds and stream health. In partnership with\nthe North and South Rivers Watershed Association\, the exhibition invites viewers\nto look more closely at the waters we depend on and consider the collective\naction needed to restore them. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:The James Library & Center for the Arts is pleased to present Knowing a Place\, a solo exhibition of travel sketches by Jim Kelliher\, on view from October 16 through November 21\, 2026. \nFor architect and avid traveler Jim Kelliher\, a camera lens can never truly capture the soul of a destination. To truly know a place\, you have to slow down and see it with a pencil in hand. \nKnowing a Place brings together a vibrant collection of ink and watercolor sketches that serve as visual journals of Kelliher’s journeys across the globe. As the founder of Axiom Architecture\, his artistic style is uniquely informed by a brain that naturally thinks in 3-D and decades of architectural drawing. Yet\, these pieces are far from rigid technical drafts; they are alive with movement\, culture\, and the spontaneous energy of the moments they capture. \nKelliher’s passion for immersion began as a student in Rome\, where he developed a love for the open road by hitchhiking to remote Italian villages armed with nothing but curiosity and a few words of local vocabulary. In the decades since—whether traveling on his own or alongside groups like the Sierra Club\, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC)\, and Rick Steves—sketching became an absolute necessity of travel. \nSeeking quiet\, out-of-the-way spots within otherwise bustling\, popular destinations\, Kelliher discovered that his sketchbook was a bridge between cultures. While working\, locals and fellow travelers would invariably approach\, sparking conversations and connections that a typical tourist might miss. \nEvery sketch in this exhibition was completed on-site in an hour or less. Kelliher captures his subject with a rapid pencil layout\, locks it in with ink\, and breathes life into it with watercolor—a technique he refined through classes at the South Shore Art Center. His entire mobile studio relies on just five pen sizes and a watercolor palette no larger than a wallet. It is a setup so compact that it has even made it into his backpacking gear—an addition he insists is well worth the weight. \n“By seeing with a pencil in hand\,” Kelliher notes\, “I learned more than I ever would have otherwise. It was true immersion.” \nKnowing a Place invites you to experience travel not as a checklist of sights\, but as an intimate\, deeply felt encounter with the world.
