SUMMARY:Nancy Hayes: Thought Translated into Form
DESCRIPTION:November 10\, 2024 – February 9\, 2025\nReception: November 10\, 2024\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nNancy Hayes’ paintings speak to how her brain organizes space\, pattern\, color\, and form. Although considered abstract\, both her sculptures and paintings depict aspects of worlds unseen. Rather than an expression of frenzy\, they depict highly organized ecosystems where each part is dependent on the whole. The unity and interdependencies speak to the building blocks of matter as well as a spiritual presence that leaves us wondering. \nHayes’ work is included in the collections of the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum\, the Danforth Museum\, the Dublin School and the New Bedford Libraries as well as many private collections. Raised outside Philadelphia\, Hayes currently resides on the South Coast of Massachusetts. \nShown: Nancy Hayes\, Beyond #2\, 2022\, acrylic on panel

SUMMARY:Water Music - Joan Appel
DESCRIPTION:North River Arts presents\nWater Music\nby Joan Appel\nJoin us in celebrating Joan Appel at the Dolphin Gallery in Hingham\, on display November 2 – December 5. All are welcome to the opening reception on Friday\, November 7\, 5:30-7:30PM. \nI am both a professional musician and artist.  Although trained as a classical musician\, art-making has always been a very important part of my life.  I have created art alongside my university and conservatory study as well as when I was performing in the United States and Europe. I feel that the execution of a painting becomes a personal performance\, different from interpreting someone else’s poetry in song as I am expressing my own poetry in color\, shape and texture. Oil painting and monotype printmaking remain my primary form of artistic expression. \nThese pieces in the exhibit Water Music bridge my love of sailing\, the seashore\, (and all things watery) and my love of music and performance. \nI am a prize-winning  exhibitor with various galleries and art associations throughout the U.S. Some of my training has been at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts\, DeCordova Museum\, Paier College of Art and I am a member of\, (to name a few) the National Association of Women Artists\, American Impressionist Society\, Monotype Guild of New England\, North River Arts Society and I am a gallery artist at the Cape Cod Art Center. \nAs a musician\, I have degrees from Syracuse University\, the New England Conservatory  and Lesley University. I performed as a coloratura soprano soloist with choruses in the New England area\, France and Switzerland.  Presently I am the Music Minster at the Linden Ponds Community Church and teach piano to adults and children in my Marshfield MA studio. \n

SUMMARY:A New Day
DESCRIPTION:The Helen Bumpus Gallery Presents\n“A New Day”\nby Denise Byrnes Graham\n  \nOn Display from November – December at the Helen Bumpus Gallery \n  \nArtist’s Statement\n“One can make a day of any size and regulate the rising and setting of his own sun and the brightness of its shining.” John Muir \nI love this quote by the naturalist John Muir because it reminds me of how fortunate I am to be an artist.  Every day is a new day to channel what I am   experiencing on to paper or canvas. Fiery sunsets\, the calm of an overcast day\, gorgeous clouds…  it brings me joy to witness such splendor. \nThe beauty of the natural world is my inspiration to paint. I find the changing seasons of New England magical with their beautiful light\, color and texture. The fields\, woods\, rivers and coastline are sacred places to wonder and paint. \nMy work is varied in approach and process. I paint in different mediums: pastel\, oil\, and acrylic. When painting abstractly\, my approach is more intuitive and loose and I use acrylic or oil. With pastels\, my paintings are representational and detailed. Whether I am painting representatively or abstractly\, I try to capture the mood\, emotion\, and luminosity of what I am seeing and feeling. \n  \nDenise is a gallery artist at South Shore Art Center Cohasset MA\, Framers Edge in Quincy MA\, and the Russell Gallery at Plymouth Center for the Arts. She is a member of Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod\, North River Arts Society\, Marshfield MA\, Duxbury Art Association\, and the Tuesday Plein Air Painters.      \ndenise.b.graham@gmail.com \ndenisebyrnesgraham.com \ninstagram.com/denisegrahamart \n

SUMMARY:Hands to Work\, Hearts to God: Celebrating Mother Ann Lee’s Legacy
DESCRIPTION:September 22\, 2024 – January 12\, 2025\nReception: November 10\, 2024\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nAnn Lee (1736-1784)\, known to the Shakers as “Mother Ann\,” is the founder of the Shaker religion\, also known as the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing. She inspired thousands of followers through her philosophy of community\, equality and charity\, and her mantra\, “Hands to work\, hearts to God.” As a result of many years of religious persecution\, Mother Ann died prematurely\, 240 years ago. This exhibit explores her legacy\, and the inspiration she imparted on the women\, or “sisters\,” who lived and worked in the nineteen Shaker communities in the United States. \nObjects on view from the museum’s collection highlight industries that “sisters” were engaged in\, and are juxtaposed with works by Massachusetts artist Laura Christensen\, who interprets Mother Ann Lee’s life and work. Christensen\, who works with vintage photographs\, has created two and three-dimensional works that explore aspects of Mother Ann Lee’s vision and the impact she had on her followers. \nShown: Shaker Sewing Desk\, late 19th century\nbutternut\, pine\, birch wood

SUMMARY:American Paintings from the Weyerhaeuser Collection
DESCRIPTION:September 22\, 2024 – January 12\, 2025\nReception: November 10\, 2024\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nCollecting American paintings was an adventure in art appreciation for the Weyerhaeuser family. DESCRIPTION:You Are Here!\nat 4th Floor Gallery in Rockland\n  \n\n   You’re invited to a new exhibit\, You Are Here!\, opening this September at the 4th Floor Gallery in Rockland\, Massachusetts. You Are Here! is a guided tour through the states and towns of New England as seen through the lens of pattern. Design Pool’s Kristen Dettoni joined forces with artist and designer Dayna Hartford of Dayna’s Textiles to explore the personal histories that connect them to this region in both literal and symbolic ways.\n  \n#image_title \n\n  \n    In the work exhibited\, they draw inspiration from their own personal map tacks\, the physical locations where they have lived\, worked\, and played. They also examine the idea that they are here because of the decisions made by their ancestors\, who chose to immigrate to America and grow roots in New England. Original artwork and printed products will be on display. Displayed together\, they will show the journey from idea to pattern to product and the rest stops along the way.\n4th Floor Gallery in the Sandpaper Factory\, 83 East Water Street\, Rockland\, MA\nSeptember 6 – 28\, 2024\nOpening Reception: September 7 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM\n\n

SUMMARY:Keith Conforti - Norwell Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Come meet artist Keith Conforti to hear about his art and process and view his current exhibit at NPL which explores neglected and abandoned worlds\, allowing him to create stories about the contradiction of beauty and decay. Keith’s photos will be on display in the meeting room from September through October. \n  \nKeith Conforti works professionally as a photographer\, graphic designer and college professor. He teaches classes and workshops on both disciplines. \n  \nHis visual style relies heavily on composition\, honed by his years as a graphic designer\, to create order out of nature’s chaos. His photos possess a silent dignity and structure that presents his subjects simply and honestly. \n  \nToday\, Keith photographs all across the country. His interest is discovering abandoned and shuttered locations that have historic pasts with meaningful stories and captivating beauty (usually created by decades of neglect and decay). He has photographed asylums\, prisons\, theaters\, shipyards\, hospitals\, schools\, mill complexes\, and just about any other location that offers a glimpse into a forgotten past. Each place has a story to share about its former purpose and how time\, nature and neglect have conspired to transform it. \n

SUMMARY:Industrial Beauty—Luminous Desert Jürgen Robert and Lisa Ryan
DESCRIPTION:Industrial Beauty—Luminous Desert\nJürgen Robert and Lisa Ryan\nAugust 18 – November 3\, 2024\nReception: September 15\, 2024\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm \nLisa and Jürgen demonstrate that industrial views\, which are typically ugly\, polluting\, noisy and dehumanizing\, can appear more like a tourist attraction at night. Night photography is transformational and nowhere is that seen more prominently than in Industrial Beauty. Colorful lights sculpt shapes and shadows\, creating shimmering reflections or glowing clouds. \nIn the Luminous Desert series\, layers of light sculpt and paint the city scenes and natural landscapes. These images are about creating an experience rather than documenting a place. The works are also opposites: human-made city scapes versus nature\, color vs. black and white\, warm vs. cold. \nWhile there are other contrasting aspects to these two bodies of work\, the artists chose to focus on the difference in the quality of light. The brilliant flash and sparkle of industrial settings contrasted with the quieter\, softer glow of desert landscapes. \n \nShown:\n(Top) Jürgen Robert\, Rainbow at Night\, photograph\n(Bottom) Lisa Ryan\, Glowing Tree\, photograph
