SUMMARY:"Common Thread"
DESCRIPTION:   Savage Godfrey Gallery presents\n“Common Thread”\n  \nAs we move into the colder months\, we gravitate toward comfort and coziness. That’s what Common Thread is bringing to the Gallery this fall. Common Thread explores the art of handwork–stitching\, quilting\, woodworking– by three distinct artists Marcia Ballou\, Mia Cross\, and Laura Petrovich-Cheney. Their vibrant works evoke a sense of lightness and familiarity\, coming together on the Gallery walls to create a warm\, inviting space for the fall season. The opening reception will be on Friday\, September 25th from 6-8 pm. The artists will be in attendance and the public is welcome. \nMarcia Ballou is a collage and stitched-fiber artist inspired by color\, light\, and the natural world. Through spontaneous and deliberate appliqué\, she combines unexpected colors\, shapes\, and textures to create joyful compositions. This is the second collaboration with Ballou and the Savage Godfrey Gallery\, the first was an exhibition at Boston Children’s Hospital’s Mini Art Museum titled PLAY in 2023. In 2025 Ballou earned two “Popular Prizes” for her mixed-media and fiber work from national exhibits at the North River Arts Society and Duxbury Art Association in 2026. Ballou is a graduate of Mills College\, CA. She creates and resides in Marshfield\, MA. \nMia Cross is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting\, printmaking\, sculpture\, sewing\, and murals. Inspired by color\, the human figure\, nature\, and everyday moments\, her work blends classical techniques with the craft and whimsy of folk art. Building on a vast portfolio of murals\, Cross (in collaboration with the Savage Godfrey Gallery) created “The Car that Went Far” a two-wall illustrated mural and coloring book for the Boston Children’s Hospital Travel Vaccine Clinic. Cross graduated from Boston University with a BFA in Painting and Sculpture and is based in Providence\, RI. \nLaura Petrovich-Cheney is a sculptor who transforms salvaged architectural wood into quilt-inspired works exploring home\, memory\, loss\, and renewal. Drawing on her background in fashion design\, she incorporates traditions of pattern making and quilt construction while preserving the weathered histories of her materials. Based in Marblehead\, MA\, Petrovich-Cheney has exhibited nationally. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe North River Arts group are excited to announce a brand new Satellite Gallery \n– The Kathleen Riley Memorial Gallery –\nat the Marshfield Senior Center \nMasters at Work\n  \nFirst to showcase at the gallery will be Marshfield Senior Center’s own instructors\, Jeanne Brouillette\, Fred Dolan & Betty Rogers. The show will be on display at the senior center starting November 5th.  \nThe opening reception is on Thursday\, November 5th\, 4:00 – 6:00P \nJeanne Brouillette is a self-taught artist\, currently working in watercolors. Her professional career as an educator has led her to teaching watercolor painting at the Marshfield Senior Center\, where she enjoys nurturing her student’s creative journey. \nFred Dolan loves painting more than anything\, except for his wife Joan. He has been painting for over 80 years. One of his favorite things is to help people get started painting. So many say “I can’t even draw a straight line\,” but he says “You can paint — anybody can.” After they get started he says\, “See\, I told you!” \nBetty Rogers is an award winning Signature Artist of the New England Watercolor Society\, a Gallery Artist at both the Plymouth Guild and the South Shore Art Center and an active member of the Duxbury Art Association and the North River Art Society. As both student and teacher\, Betty has participated in the many opportunities for growth available to emerging artists in the region. She paints weekly with the Tuesdays Painters\, en plein aire\, weather permitting. Betty also has been the solo artist at Marshfield’s Ventress Library and the Bumpus Gallery at the Duxbury Library Selected awards include First Place for Watercolor at the Kingston\, Duxbury\, Pembroke and North River Art Festivals. DESCRIPTION:The Duxbury Art Complex Museum presents\nRembrandt Reconsidered: Light and Shadow\nFebruary 7 – April 25\, 2027 \n\nThis exhibition brings together the innovative etchings of Rembrandt van Rijn and the contemporary work by Rhode Island artist\, Taleen Batalian\, whose practice engages deeply with the Dutch master’s legacy. As one of the most significant artists of the 17th century\, Rembrandt explored the dramatic potential of light and shadow across paintings\, etchings\, and intimate self-portraits known as tronies — the Dutch word for faces. \nIn dialogue with Rembrandt’s etchings\, the contemporary works on view explore themes of tonality\, contrast\, and degrees of the finished and unfinished. Drawing on personal experiences\, Batalian’s pairings invite open-ended conversations between present and past\, and contemporary and historical art. Together\, these works ask us to consider what endures across time — and what new meaning emerges when two artistic visions\, separated by centuries\, are brought into conversation. \nMuseum co-founder Carl Weyerhaeuer first collected Rembrandt’s work while touring Europe as a recent college graduate. Rembrandt’s etchings formed a foundation for his collection that later became the Art Complex Museum\, opening its doors in 1971.

DESCRIPTION:The Duxbury Art Complex Museum presents\nConservation Project: Väggbonad Murals\n  \nMay 9 – August 29\, 2027 \nPainted by local or itinerant artists\, these brightly colored murals were custom made to commemorate family events such as a birth or marriage\, but most depicted scenes of village and farm life or Biblical stories. Stylistically\, the murals in the Art Complex Museum’s collection are similar in design to early to mid-19th century Swedish Väggbonads. The substrates are usually linen\, cotton or paper\, stitched together to create varying lengths. Typically painted in tempera\, each mural has a border at the top with a legend written in script. Learn about how these murals were recently conserved by Museum Textile Services\, Andover\, Massachusetts. They returned to the museum after spending a year in the conservation lab for “spa” treatment. \nThe museum’s murals illustrate two Biblical passages and include stylized figures wearing brightly colored traditional 18th-century Swedish costumes. Some play musical instruments\, ride horses or sit in a carriage: \n  \nMural A: Joseph and His Brothers-depicts Genesis:37-50. Joseph\, most beloved of Jacob’s sons\, is hated by his envious brothers. \nMural B: Marriage of Cana-depicts John 2:1-11\, the story of Christ’s first public miracle\, performed at a wedding feast in the village of Cana. \n

A painter\, drawer\, and former university professor\, Harris brings a richly layered perspective shaped by careers in fine arts education\, scenic painting at Santa Fe Opera\, and fashion design in Boston\, New York\, and Tokyo. His creative journey includes collecting South Asian miniature drawings (now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art)\, textiles from Japan\, India\, Turkey\, and Britain\, and contemporary New England drawings. Harris’s work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston\, Museum at the University of Tennessee\, Athalie Ltd. (Tokyo)\, Indar Pashricha Contemporary (London)\, Gallery Kayafas (Boston)\, COVEStreetarts Gallery (Portland\, ME)\, and the Boston Public Library.
