SUMMARY:Soft Horizons
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Jaynia Matherwiez: Soft Horizons: Paintings of Sea and Sky\nOn Display from September 6 to October 2\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\nGrowing up on the Massachusetts coast instilled in Jaynia Matherwiez a lifelong appreciation for the water\, a theme that deeply resonates in her abstract seascapes. Following a career in educational publishing and web design\, Jaynia rediscovered her artistic drive in 2022. Her paintings\, often created with palette knives and brushes\, utilize a rich spectrum of blues and greens to evoke the ocean’s spirit. Beyond seascapes\, she also explores intuitive abstract and mixed media pieces. Connect with Jaynia and view more of her art on Instagram. \nWebsite: matherwiezart.com

SUMMARY:My Wall: Private Collection
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Betsy Taylor: My Wall: Private Collection\nOn Display from September 6 to October 2\,  Clemens Gallery of the Hingham Library\nAbout the Artist\nElizabeth Lee Taylor\, AKA Betsy Taylor\, earned her BFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design in 1974. \nBorn and raised in the Rochester\, NY and Finger Lakes regions\, her focus was primarily drawing and graphics\, specializing in figures for commercial illustration. \nWith a group of professional artists Betsy helped form the Earth & Arts Center in a historic stone gristmill in her village of Honeoye Falls\, NY. As it grew it reorganized as a non-profit Art Center\, offering art classes with a fantastic gallery to help support and enrich it\, becoming Mill Art Center & Gallery. \nWith her cohorts Betsy taught drawing and painting classes there\, installed exhibits\, sold her works and the art of hundreds of artists. She managed Mill Arts Center & Gallery for 18 years until she and her husband moved to MA. \nBetsy serves Hull Artists on the Board of Directors; manning Gallery Nantasket; as Curator for Gallery Nantasket and Hull Artists’ outside venues; creating graphics for posters and ads. \nYou can find her paintings in Gallery Nantasket\, the Hull Public Library and in Nantasket Beach Resort.

SUMMARY:Weathered Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Savage Godfrey Gallery Presents\nWeathered Beauty\na collection of works from Christine Bodnar\, Suzette Lebenzon\, and Ken Shanno\n\n\n\n\n    This fall\, the Savage Godfrey Gallery will open its fifth exhibition Weathered Beauty. Paintings by Christine Bodnar and Suzette Lebenzon\, along with sculptures by Ken Shannon\, explore our connection with nature and evoke the sense of tranquility we often seek within it. With bold colors\, rich textures\, and expressive forms\, these paintings and sculptures will resonate with nature lovers. \nAn opening reception will be held at the Gallery on Thursday\, September 11th from 6-8 pm. We are excited to announce that this exhibition will complete Savage Godfrey Gallery’s first year in business. It has been a joy to join the Norwell business community. We look forward to hosting another year of unique exhibitions and forging new connections within the South Shore community. \n\n\n\n\nChristine Bodnar’s passion for painting is deeply intertwined with her fascination with color and how it can change the mood and feeling of a moment. She is a contemporary realist with an expressive style\, and relies on the light she encounters painting en plen air to set the drama of color\, shadow\, and the rhythm in a composition. She balances her time creating acrylic paintings\, pastel on paper\, and teaching. Bodnar lives in Marshfield\, paints in Rockland and exhibits her work nationally. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n    Ken Shannon is driven to find and transform often overlooked\, natural materials. Each weathered piece of driftwood holds a unique story of inherent beauty\, change\, and renewal. Inspired by the raw textures\, organic forms\, and the rich history of the ocean and its shores\, Shannon engages with each uncut piece. By assembling and giving new life to these found materials\, Shannon invites viewers to appreciate the art in nature’s transformative power and reflect on our own connection to environmental cycles. Shannon lives and works in Cohasset. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n    Suzette Lebenzon allows herself complete license to create images that interest her\, crafting visual poems that express her wishes\, feelings\, and experiences on Cape Cod and around the South Shore where she grew up. She embraces a bold\, expressive style of mark-making that is deeply tied to memory and is unconcerned with accurately representing a specific place. Recently\, exploring reflective water surfaces and the surrounding vegetation has captivated her. Lebenzon lives and paints in Welfleet; she exhibits her paintings on the Cape\, South Shore and NY.

SUMMARY:In Sunlight
DESCRIPTION:In Sunlight\nworks by Joreen Benbenek\n  \nJoin us in celebration of the works by Joreen Benbenek\, on display October 5 – November 6\, 2025 at the Dolphin Gallery\, located in the Hingham Library. Opening Reception: Thursday\, October 9\, 5:30-7:00 pm \n  \nArtist Statement: Capturing fleeting moments of majesty and beauty of the illuminated landscape have been a lifelong motivation and inspiration for me. I strive to capture in my landscape paintings not only a unique sense of place but also the emotional experience of the illusive and ever- changing effects of light that can only be experienced by the direct observation of nature. I can’t remember a time when I was not compelled to create art. As a child\, my greatest joy and love was sketching\, painting and experimenting with different art mediums\, trying to capture the essence of the world around me. I pursued my passion in college\, earning my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting\, which I supplemented with training from Boston area painters whose work I admired\, including Alfred Chadbourn\, Charles Sovek\, and painting master\, Michael Keane. My chosen medium has always been oils\, whether working on location “en plein air”\, observing nature firsthand\, or doing larger work from on location studies in my studio\, my goal and motivation is always the same\, to capture the glorious and fleeting dramatic moments of light and shadow on landscapes and cityscapes. I enhance and revise my color values\, shapes and tones until my painting reflects the initial impact and mood of the scene in front of me. I want the viewer to feel as if they can walk into my paintings\, stand beside me and experience the same joy and wonder at the beauty of our natural world. I am inspired daily to capture with paint and canvas the beauty\, drama and luminosity of the world around me.

SUMMARY:"Realism to Abstraction"
DESCRIPTION:Artist Karie O’Donnell\nOctober 7 – December 21\, 2025\nFrom Realism to Abstraction \nArtist Statement\nI have been in love with the ethereal beauty of birds for as long as I can remember. As soon as I was able to hold a pencil\, I became fascinated with capturing these beautiful creatures – their images\, personalities and spirits on paper. And\, so\, I have been portraying them all my life in paper sculptures\, graphite drawings\, and since 2012\, in oil paintings. Realism had been my primary style up until Covid emerged. During this solemn time of solitude and reflection\, I let go of control and explored the freedom of abstraction. It’s been enlightening. \nBy combining both styles\, my goal is to accentuate the beauty and balance of nature\, while pushing the elements of shape\, texture and color.\nMy love for art and wildlife was cultivated during childhood summers with my grandmother in North Carolina. She enrolled me in art classes and encouraged me to journal. I spent countless\, tranquil hours in the woods drawing and writing about my bird and animal observations. My life between these summers was disorderly\, moving yearly until the age of 14. So\, creating art became my refuge and sense of control. Every stroke is a decision to connect to another stroke\, and every shape has its place – akin to assembling a puzzle. Interestingly\, math plays an integral part to this creative process. \nDrafting classes in high school led to Architecture in College\, but I soon discovered that Graphic Arts and Illustration were a better fit. Inspired by Leo Monahan’s work\, paper sculpture became my primary medium at Mass Art. Each piece was a gratifying challenge of connecting shapes and then photographing the outcome in a different light. As my works became more detailed and hand painted\, I embarked on an Endangered Animal series. But In 2009\, my new mentor encouraged me to set aside paper sculpture and re-explore my drawing skills. \nI then began a long series of graphite bird portraits – mastering lights\, darks and all the shades between. Little did I know\, this endeavor laid the groundwork for my future success in oil painting. To my delight\, I naturally understood color value and fell in love with oil painting from the first attempt. Many of my oils have an accompanying graphite study; each medium complimenting the other. My style had been realism with brushwork\, but palette knife painting eventually became an integral part of my process. This element of fluidity helped aid my big leap into the exploration of abstraction. \nBio\n‘My joy is to recreate a beautiful moment with exceptional design & craftsmanship in every detail.’\nKarie O’Donnell graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art with a BFA in Illustration. She studied architecture and graphic design at NYIT as well as photography with the University of Pittsburgh’s Semester at Sea\, visiting 10 countries around the world. Her oil paintings\, graphite drawings\, paper sculptures and walnut inks have won numerous awards. She is a Signature Member of the Society of Animal Artists and a licensed Massachusetts Wildlife Rehabilitator.

SUMMARY:"Shared Realities"
DESCRIPTION:The Helen Bumpus Gallery presents\n“Shared Realities”\na collection of works by Artist Kerry W. Buckley\n  \nArtist’s Statement\nMy lifelong passion for painting and drawing became a full-time obsession when I retired from academic life in 2013.  I look upon art as more of a craft. For me\, the work itself is a form of meditation. It is a creative process that absorbs the heart and hand. My landscapes tend to reflect seasonal changes on the outer cape from the brooding tranquility of an autumn afternoon to the off-season\, when the bones of the landscape are laid bare. There is a quiet dignity to these empty places. They are unoccupied but not abandoned. They lie in wait for the next cycle to begin. I am drawn to liminal spaces\, a portal to somewhere else. I do not try to capture reality\, but a mood\, the fleeting light of a solitary moment. My still life paintings explore the rituals that give meaning to the random contingencies of life or the ambiguous innocence of childhoods past. There is a whimsical wistfulness about these mementos that evoke a lost time of wonder and delight. I seek to engage the viewer with a shared human emotion and a slice of lived experience preserved from the relentless flow of time. \nAbout the Artist\n \nAs a student\, Kerry W. Buckley won several statewide art competitions and initially considered a degree in fine art. He was offered\, but declined\, an art scholarship choosing to become an historian specializing in American History. Throughout his academic career he continued to draw and paint. While living in western Massachusetts he developed friendships with regional neorealist artists Scott Prior\, Randal Deihl and Jane Lund whose vision and techniques inspired his work. Since his retirement from academic life\, he has studied portraiture and painting at the Guild Art Center in Northampton\, MA\, classical painting technique with Barbara Johnson\, and indirect painting techniques with Julie Beck at the Academy for Realist Art. He is a Professional Artist member of the Copley Society of Art in Boston and is a Master Artist member of the Cape Cod Art Center. His work has been featured in competitive shows throughout New England and has received awards in national and regional shows. \nWebsite: www.kerrywbuckley.com \nInstagram: @kerrywbuckley

SUMMARY:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Kitty Wales: Traces\nNovember 9 – February 8\, 2026\nReception: November 9\, 2025\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nDomestic table settings\, disassembled furniture and recycled wood are the building blocks of these narrative assemblages. They contain memories that morph over time shifting in and out of the original thread\, leaving traces of the past. \nThis subject matter began in 2019 after studying Mesoamerican codices on a visit to the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City. As painted manuscripts\, they document bloodlines\, history\, science\, and sacred rituals of Mayan and Aztec rulers. Within tight frameworks\, these colorful pictorial languages are activated by symbols and characters. I loosely borrowed that format of recorded history to build beginning stages into storied landscapes. \nDiscarded objects have always been materials of choice in my work\, making use of what we leave behind.  Within each wall construction are fabricated household objects serving as historical icons\, reanimating the memories they retain. Altered purposely in their construction\, these crockeries and vessels still represent potential utility and purpose despite their misshapen appearance. \nEach piece in this series evolves through the process of making and\nexperimenting\, as I build up multiple layers of color and texture with mixed media and paper pulp. Some of these layers are visible while others are buried\, erased\, or altered to mimic the shifting nature of narrative memory.

SUMMARY:20 Walks
DESCRIPTION:Lin Lisberger:\n20 Walks\nat the Duxbury Art Complex \nNovember 15\, 2026 – February 14\, 2027\nReception: Sunday\, November 15\, 2026\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm \n\nLin Lisberger has always been interested in combining abstraction and narrative in her work. 20 Walks references the physical memory of her own walks in places at home and around the world. Each piece captures a sense of place along with the memory of a particular personal moment or sight\, evoking a recollection\, not telling all the details. This form of abstraction keeps the pieces simpler\, more elegant\, and hopefully visceral\, while always keeping form essential.
