SUMMARY:Just Passing Through
DESCRIPTION:  The James Library presents\nJust Passing Through\n  \nTHE ARTISTS \nLisa Daria Kennedy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n– About the Artist – Lisa Daria Kennedy grew up along the northeast edge of the Hockomock Swamp in Massachusetts. She holds a BA in Graphic Design from Roger Williams University\, a BFA in Illustration and an MFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston\, where she is an Associate Professor. She lives with her Wheaten Terrier\, Olive\, in an old fishing camp at World’s End. When she’s not painting\, she’s paddling. \n– From the Artist – For over 5\,900 days (and counting) I’ve created one small painting a day. When the daily painting is complete\, I work in the studio on larger\, narrative pieces\, based on the themes of abject embodiment and social spaces and the people in them. I use observation as a launching point and combine imagery from found 8mm films. \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaula Villanova \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n– About the Artist – Paula Villanova grew up in a time and place where seeing original art and spaces in which to make art almost seemed like a rarity and luxury. There was no internet\, weekly art class felt like an oasis\, and most of the people we knew were not artists and didn’t seem to have original art in their homes. Gratefully\, with parents who recognized my clear drive to make art\, and even thought I could draw! (kind of a big deal to them)\, They decided that they would support my desire for an art school education after High School. \nPaula received a B.F.A. in Visual Design from Southeastern Massachusetts University (now UMASS Dartmouth)\, although she started out at Westfield State College (now University) for two years with concentration in painting. \nPaula held several art related jobs both in advertising agencies and design studios and then worked as a freelance artist early on\, then later decided to follow a different path and to take non-art jobs but continue to do my studio work completely separate from my employment. \nPaula continues to win exhibition space in juried shows\, and have been the recipient of multiple awards\, including a Best In Show for the North River Arts Society Festival of the Arts poster contest in 2023. \n– From the Artist – I don’t think I go anywhere in the course of my day(s) without seeing at least one thing or vignette that looks like it would be a wonderful image in paint on a canvas. The trick is to convey that fraction of a scene into something that pleases me\, and with any luck\, others too. Sometimes\, it’s the people in a space that I wish to portray. We all share the same world\, we just often see it differently. I have traveled to many interesting places around the world\, but I’ve learned that I don’t need to travel to find a subject that would make a good painting. I paint in acrylics\, both plein-air and in the studio.

SUMMARY:Savage Godfrey Gallery presents "Dreamscape"
DESCRIPTION:Savage Godfrey Gallery presents\n“Dreamscape”\na collection of works from artists Dina Brennan\, Andrew Fish\, Robert S. Neuman\n  \n\n\n\n   Witness the coalescence of landscape painting and color theory in Dreamscape\, the Savage Godfrey Gallery’s winter exhibition. Surreal abstract compositions evoking memory\, emotion\, and connection by artists Dina Brennan\, Andrew Fish\, and Robert S. Neuman (1926-2015) will come together on our walls to cure your winter blues with an exceptionally vibrant visual spectacle. \nThe opening reception will be on Friday\, February 6th from 6-8 pm\, Dina Brennan and Andrew Fish will be in attendance. Our reception will coincide with the neighboring James Library Art Gallery’s reception for Just Passing Through. The reception will be followed by an Artist Talk on Sunday\, March 22nd from 1-3 pm featuring Dina and Andrew. \nBuilding on her first solo show Color Noise (2025)\, Dina Brennan’s showing will comprise a series of her expressive color studies. She paints them daily to capture the ever-changing New England seasons and patterns found in nature. The dazzling colors and textures in her works offer an invitation to feel and even hear the color with a wandering imagination. Dina paints in Quincy\, MA and curates exhibitions at the Frame Center Gallery in Hanover\, MA. \nAndrew Fish’s oil paintings feature moments of convergence. Abstraction meets representation\, while the borders between reality\, memory\, and dreams blur in a dramatic outpouring of color. The paintings selected for Dreamscape reference familiar scenes and experiences filtered through Fish’s abstracted lens. Fish paints at Mount Vernon Street Studios in Somerville\, MA\, and teaches at Mass Art and Lesley Art+Design. He exhibits his artwork throughout the country and abroad. \nKicking off the 2026 Robert S. Neuman Centennial Project\, Dreamscape will feature etchings from Neuman’s Ship to Paradise series. The series is a sharp\, modern take on Sebastian Brandt’s medieval “best-seller” Shype of Fooles\, chronicling topsy-turvy medieval barques—manned by literal skeleton crews—sailing on an existential sea in search of paradise. The Centennial Project is a year-long celebration of Neuman’s lifetime of art with multiple solo and group exhibitions throughout New England. As part of the Centennial Project\, the Art Complex in Duxbury\, MA is also exhibiting two Ship to Paradise prints and their plates. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Waterways-Lashed & Untethered
DESCRIPTION:Mo Kelman: Waterways-Lashed & Untethered\nat the Duxbury Art Complex Museum \nFebruary 15 – May 10\, 2026 \nRooted in childhood memories of Cleveland’s industrial landscape and the burning Cuyahoga River of 1969\, Mo Kelman’s sculptures merge water’s shifting forms with the stark geometry of steel and bridges. \nUsing simple\, tactile materials\, she explores the tension between nature’s unstoppable force and human engineering. These works celebrate craft\, resilience\, and transformation\, revealing both the beauty of construction and the inevitability of nature’s power.

Trained as an architect\, the artist devoted his life to etching\, creating his first print in 1927 on a used press that he purchased when he graduated from Columbia University in New York City. \nIn the 1930s and early 1940s\, Landeck’s imagery focused on scenes of New York City\, where he was studying\, as well as rural Cornwall\, Connecticut. While in New York\, he took classes at the Art Students League\, visited museums and galleries\, and continued experimenting with printmaking. He briefly studied at the Atelier 17 with Stanley Hayter (1901–1988). Hayter introduced Landeck to copper engraving and the artist quickly became fascinated with this technique. His early training as an architect supported the careful rendering of the city’s buildings and all their details. Included in the exhibit are some of Landeck’s early prints as well as his later\, architectural scenes\, like Manhattan Rooftop in the Moonlight\, created in 1980.

SUMMARY:Local Strokes
DESCRIPTION:Diane Tremitiere Monaghan\nLocal Strokes\nWhat a little sandpaper and chalk can do\n \nArtist’s Statement\nWhen my family and I moved to Duxbury Massachusetts from Chicago\, I was stunned by the beauty that abounds here. I would like to inspire local residents to marvel at the colors all around them that they might take for granted\, whether it be an old mailbox\, shadows on the beach\, or a cranberry harvest in progress. My chosen medium is soft pastel on 400 grit sanded paper although I’ve worked in watercolor and acrylic. \nIt has been a particular joy to see my daughter Caitlin using her artistic talents in many ways – she chooses a subject and figures out how to turn it into a creative and beautiful gift for someone. Her results are amazing! \n

SUMMARY:Now is Then
DESCRIPTION:North River Arts presents\nNow is Then\nJoin us in celebration of Now Is Then by Sage Belber\, on display March 7 – April 2 at the Dolphin Gallery\, located in the Hingham Library. Opening Reception: Thursday\, March 12th\, 5:30-7:00 pm \n  \nArtist Statement:  \nNow becomes then\, moments become memories\, but in the moment: the weight of emotions\, the dynamics of our relationships to others\, and the places we inhabit hold such solidity\, it’s hard to realize we are forever falling into the past and slipping into the future. \nAs these moments pass by\, I catch the now with meditation and focus\, my interpretation solidifies in oil paint on canvas\, and is delivered to future viewers: a moment in time and its timelessness.
