DESCRIPTION:Artist Marcia Ballou—Kaleidoscope\nOPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY\, MAY 10\, 2024 | 6:00-8:00 PM\nON VIEW FRIDAY\, MAY 10TH THROUGH SATURDAY\, JUNE 15\, 2024\nSPONSORED BY THE MARSHFIELD CULTURAL COUNCIL\, A LOCAL AGENCY SUPPORTED BY THE MASS CULTURAL COUNCIL\, A STATE AGENCY.\nINSPIRATION\nOn a sparkling summer day\, I was sitting on a bench in my field enjoying the bright light and beautiful summer flowers when a dance of nature appeared before my eyes. A swarm of dragonflies was diving\, circling and chasing each other\, their wings sparkling in the sunlight. And then Monarch butterflies appeared\, many of them\, floating into the scene and joining the dance. It was enchanting. This scene is held in my memory as a treasure. It is a scene I paint\, always trying to portray the feeling I had: joy. \nA KALEIDOSCOPE. \nCollage is my medium. I use a palette of painted papers\, cloth\, paints\, and threads. The process is slow\, and I employ deliberate and spontaneous applications. I create colorful gestures and intuitive patterns with paint for atmosphere and then assemble papers\, cloth\, and threads with either acrylic mediums or hand stitches. They are put together like a jigsaw puzzle. The compositions are enlivened by the unexpected combinations of material and shapes. And then sometimes a realistic painting of a favorite creature appears against the abstract dance of color. The patterns always seem to create blossoms of texture on the surface of the finished piece. My goal is to evoke joy.

SUMMARY:Focus on Figures
DESCRIPTION:North River Arts presents\n“Focus on Figures”\n  \nFocus on Figures is our annual celebration of the art of the figure. This is an open show invite to all artists to submit work in any medium to be exhibited in our historic GAR Hall. A series of events including a two-day workshop\, a drop-in figure session and a portrait demonstration have been scheduled during the run of this exhibit. \nDeadline for Entries: Tuesday March 5\, 2024 at Midnight \nOnline Entry: The entry form\, digital images and payment of entry fee must be submitted to ShowSubmit.com. We suggest you go to ShowSubmit.com in advance to set up an account\, if you don’t already have one\, and familiarize yourself with the entry process.  \n\n\n\nArtists can submit up to 5 pieces\nMembership is not required for entry \nCost $25 for first entry\, $10 for each additional entry (up to 5 total)\n\n\n\nEligibility \n\n\n\nAll forms of artwork are allowed\nAll artwork must be originally created and is the original artist’s work from conception through execution. The artwork must not be a copy of likeness of another’s work or derived from a published painting\, drawing\, photograph\, digital image or print.\nNo size restrictions\, within reason. For very oversize or heavy pieces\, please contact us before submitting.\nSubmissions of artwork done during the course of an in-person or online workshop or class is not permitted.\nWork must not have been previously exhibited in a North River Arts exhibition\, including satellite galleries.\nWork does not need to be for sale.\nAll 2D work must be framed or gallery wrapped (finished edges) and wired for hanging. No saw tooth hangers.\nSculptors must provide their own pedestals. \nWork deemed unsuitable will not be accepted or hung\n\n\n\nImportant Dates \n\n\n\nMarch 5 @ Midnight – Deadline for Entries\nMarch 12 – Acceptance Notifications \nMarch 27\, 6-8pm OR March 30\, 11am-2pm – Drop Off Artwork \nApril 6\, 6-8pm – Opening and Awards Ceremony\, awards at 7:30PM. \nApril 6 – May 2 – Exhibition Dates\, Exhibition posted online to NorthRiverArts.org\nApril 6 and 7\, 9am-4pm/Daily – Workshop with Diane Rappisi\nMay 4\, 11am-2pm\, OR May 6\, 6-8pm – Pick Up Artwork\n\n\n\nSales: Members charged a 40% commission and non-members charged 50%. All artwork must remain hung until close of show. \nHand Delivery and Shipping: Information will be provided to artists upon acceptance into the Awards Show. \nJudge of Selection and Awards: Diane Rappisi  \nDiane Rappisi is a contemporary realist painter whose work fuses the light and chroma of the Cape Cod colorists with the form and structure of the traditional Italian and French academies. She works in oil\, pastel\, charcoal\, and graphite.  \nDiane is a member of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) Masters Circle and served on its Board of Directors from 2016-2021.  She is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and the Maryland Pastel Society\, and also holds memberships in the Salmagundi Club in New York\, the Oil Painters of America\, and the Pastel Society of Colorado.  Her work resides in numerous private and public collections across the US\, in New Zealand\, Australia and the Netherlands\, and selected pieces have been published for the National Park Service in Glen Echo\, MD.
