SUMMARY:Beneath the Surface: Where Art and Science Meet the Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Meet the artists & scientists of Beneath the Surface\, then join a panel discussion on how watershed field visits shaped this art\n\n\nFor the exhibition Beneath the Surface\, participating artists spent months in the field alongside scientists from the North and South Rivers Watershed Association\, visiting monitoring sites\, wetlands\, and shorelines across the watershed. Guided by the scientists’ research and firsthand observations\, the artists translated data\, ecological processes\, and direct encounters with these landscapes into original works exploring the health\, history\, and future of our local waterways. \nJoin us for a panel conversation bringing together artists and scientists from the project to discuss how the collaboration unfolded — from muddy boots in the field to finished work on the gallery wall. Panelists will share what it was like to see a familiar landscape through another discipline’s eyes\, how scientific observation can shape artistic process\, and what art can reveal about environmental change that data alone cannot capture. \nThis is a rare opportunity to hear directly from both sides of the creative-scientific partnership at the heart of Beneath the Surface — a conversation for anyone curious about watershed health\, contemporary art\, or what happens when these two ways of seeing the world come together. \n5:30–6:00 PM | Meet & Greet in Judah Alden Gallery: Meet the artists and scientists informally among the works in Beneath the Surface before the discussion begins. \n6:00–7:00 PM | Panel Discussion\, Main Museum Building: Conversation with artists and North and South Rivers Watershed Association scientists.

SUMMARY:20 Walks
DESCRIPTION:Lin Lisberger:\n20 Walks\nat the Duxbury Art Complex \nNovember 15\, 2026 – February 14\, 2027\nReception: Sunday\, November 15\, 2026\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm \n\nLin Lisberger has always been interested in combining abstraction and narrative in her work. 20 Walks references the physical memory of her own walks in places at home and around the world. Each piece captures a sense of place along with the memory of a particular personal moment or sight\, evoking a recollection\, not telling all the details. This form of abstraction keeps the pieces simpler\, more elegant\, and hopefully visceral\, while always keeping form essential.

SUMMARY:Rembrandt Reconsidered: Light and Shadow
DESCRIPTION:The Duxbury Art Complex Museum presents\nRembrandt Reconsidered: Light and Shadow\nFebruary 7 – April 25\, 2027 \n\nThis exhibition brings together the innovative etchings of Rembrandt van Rijn and the contemporary work by Rhode Island artist\, Taleen Batalian\, whose practice engages deeply with the Dutch master’s legacy. As one of the most significant artists of the 17th century\, Rembrandt explored the dramatic potential of light and shadow across paintings\, etchings\, and intimate self-portraits known as tronies — the Dutch word for faces. \nIn dialogue with Rembrandt’s etchings\, the contemporary works on view explore themes of tonality\, contrast\, and degrees of the finished and unfinished. Drawing on personal experiences\, Batalian’s pairings invite open-ended conversations between present and past\, and contemporary and historical art. Together\, these works ask us to consider what endures across time — and what new meaning emerges when two artistic visions\, separated by centuries\, are brought into conversation. \nMuseum co-founder Carl Weyerhaeuer first collected Rembrandt’s work while touring Europe as a recent college graduate. Rembrandt’s etchings formed a foundation for his collection that later became the Art Complex Museum\, opening its doors in 1971.

SUMMARY:Jess Hurley Scott: This Place\, This Hour
DESCRIPTION:The Duxbury Art Complex Museum presents\nJess Hurley Scott: This Place\, This Hour\n  \nFebruary 21 – May 9\, 2027 \n\nJess Hurley Scott creates dimensional paintings that explore light\, illusion\, and perception through layered acrylic panels painted in reverse. Working with multiple translucent surfaces\, she produces luminous compositions that blur the boundary between painting and sculpture\, inviting viewers to look beneath the surface and experience shifting depths of image and color. Influenced by the sea\, landscape\, and the changing properties of water\, Scott’s work balances precision with atmosphere\, clarity with distortion\, and stillness with movement. Her process draws on a background in design and product development\, combining technical experimentation with painterly sensitivity. The result is a distinctive body of work that is both visually striking and meditative\, reflecting her ongoing fascination with translucency\, impermanence\, and the power of light to transform perception.

SUMMARY:Conservation Project: Väggbonad Murals
DESCRIPTION:The Duxbury Art Complex Museum presents\nConservation Project: Väggbonad Murals\n  \nMay 9 – August 29\, 2027 \nPainted by local or itinerant artists\, these brightly colored murals were custom made to commemorate family events such as a birth or marriage\, but most depicted scenes of village and farm life or Biblical stories. Stylistically\, the murals in the Art Complex Museum’s collection are similar in design to early to mid-19th century Swedish Väggbonads. The substrates are usually linen\, cotton or paper\, stitched together to create varying lengths. Typically painted in tempera\, each mural has a border at the top with a legend written in script. Learn about how these murals were recently conserved by Museum Textile Services\, Andover\, Massachusetts. They returned to the museum after spending a year in the conservation lab for “spa” treatment. \nThe museum’s murals illustrate two Biblical passages and include stylized figures wearing brightly colored traditional 18th-century Swedish costumes. Some play musical instruments\, ride horses or sit in a carriage: \n  \nMural A: Joseph and His Brothers-depicts Genesis:37-50. Joseph\, most beloved of Jacob’s sons\, is hated by his envious brothers. \nMural B: Marriage of Cana-depicts John 2:1-11\, the story of Christ’s first public miracle\, performed at a wedding feast in the village of Cana. \n
