SUMMARY:Beneath the Surface
DESCRIPTION:The Duxbury Art Museum presents\nBeneath the Surface\nBeneath the Surface: Artists and NSRWA Reveal the True Nature of Our Waters\nOctober 11 – November 13\, 2026 \n\nFrom the scenic banks of the North and South Rivers\, the water may appear calm\nand untouched\, but beneath the surface lies a story of environmental stress and\nresilience. This exhibition brings together diverse artistic perspectives to explore\nthe hidden challenges facing South Shore waterways\, including historic mill dams\,\ndeclining water quality\, reduced water quantity\, and the effects of climate\nchange. \nThe works reveal how dams fragment rivers and block fish migration\, how human\ndemand and impervious surfaces strain groundwater\, and how runoff and\nbacterial spikes can harm shellfish beds and stream health. In partnership with\nthe North and South Rivers Watershed Association\, the exhibition invites viewers\nto look more closely at the waters we depend on and consider the collective\naction needed to restore them. \n\n

SUMMARY:Knowing a Place by Jim Kelliher
DESCRIPTION:The James Library & Center for the Arts is pleased to present Knowing a Place\, a solo exhibition of travel sketches by Jim Kelliher\, on view from October 16 through November 21\, 2026. \nFor architect and avid traveler Jim Kelliher\, a camera lens can never truly capture the soul of a destination. To truly know a place\, you have to slow down and see it with a pencil in hand. \nKnowing a Place brings together a vibrant collection of ink and watercolor sketches that serve as visual journals of Kelliher’s journeys across the globe. As the founder of Axiom Architecture\, his artistic style is uniquely informed by a brain that naturally thinks in 3-D and decades of architectural drawing. Yet\, these pieces are far from rigid technical drafts; they are alive with movement\, culture\, and the spontaneous energy of the moments they capture. \nKelliher’s passion for immersion began as a student in Rome\, where he developed a love for the open road by hitchhiking to remote Italian villages armed with nothing but curiosity and a few words of local vocabulary. In the decades since—whether traveling on his own or alongside groups like the Sierra Club\, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC)\, and Rick Steves—sketching became an absolute necessity of travel. \nSeeking quiet\, out-of-the-way spots within otherwise bustling\, popular destinations\, Kelliher discovered that his sketchbook was a bridge between cultures. While working\, locals and fellow travelers would invariably approach\, sparking conversations and connections that a typical tourist might miss. \nEvery sketch in this exhibition was completed on-site in an hour or less. Kelliher captures his subject with a rapid pencil layout\, locks it in with ink\, and breathes life into it with watercolor—a technique he refined through classes at the South Shore Art Center. His entire mobile studio relies on just five pen sizes and a watercolor palette no larger than a wallet. It is a setup so compact that it has even made it into his backpacking gear—an addition he insists is well worth the weight. \n“By seeing with a pencil in hand\,” Kelliher notes\, “I learned more than I ever would have otherwise. It was true immersion.” \nKnowing a Place invites you to experience travel not as a checklist of sights\, but as an intimate\, deeply felt encounter with the world.

SUMMARY:Duxbury - Sights and Delights
DESCRIPTION:The Helen Bumpus Gallery presents\nDuxbury – Sights and Delights\nWatercolors by Kathy Ferrara\nOn Display from November 3rd until January 3rd with an opening reception on Friday\, November 6th from 5:30-700pm \nArtist Statement\n \nI see beauty in the simplest of things: \nDew drops on a spiderweb.\nA pat of butter melting on a hot scone.\nLight glistening on the facet of a cut crystal vase.\nThe grain patterns on a piece of wood. \nThrough my art\, I strive to convey the beauty that is all around us\, and evoke delight in those who may see the world through my point of view. It is my hope to remind people to take a moment out of their fast-paced\, techno-saturated lives and look\, take notice\, and appreciate what is\, all too often\, taken for granted. \nLook up at the sky often\, for you will never see the same one again. \n

SUMMARY:An Evening with Kate Gilbert & Danielle Krcmar
DESCRIPTION:The Duxbury Art Complex Museum presents\nAn Evening with Kate Gilbert & Danielle Krcmar\n  \nExhibiting artists Kate Gilbert and Danielle Krcmar will explore how found objects\, chance\, and care shape our relationship to ecology and social systems. Gilbert’s sculpture and installation work repurposes overlooked and impermanent materials — insulation\, fabric\, salvaged asphalt — to question who shapes our ideas of comfort\, shelter\, and consumption\, and at what cost. Krcmar’s environmental and architectural sculpture draws on found and reclaimed materials to reveal the histories embedded in a place\, from woodland landscapes to the ruins left behind by disaster. Together\, they’ll discuss what it means to notice\, gather\, and care for what’s already there — and how chance encounters with discarded or natural materials can become a way of thinking about ecological and social interdependence. \nThis talk is offered in conjunction with the exhibition Interpreting the Natural: Contemporary Visions of Scholars’ Rocks.
