SUMMARY:Reception for Armin Landeck: Rooftops and More
DESCRIPTION:The Duxbury Art Complex presents\nArmin Landeck:\nRooftops and More\nFebruary 1 – April 26\, 2026\nReception: February 22\, 2026\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nThough the subjects he focused on were simple\, printmaker Armin Landeck’s artwork was passionate and bold. Trained as an architect\, the artist devoted his life to etching\, creating his first print in 1927 on a used press that he purchased when he graduated from Columbia University in New York City. \nIn the 1930s and early 1940s\, Landeck’s imagery focused on scenes of New York City\, where he was studying\, as well as rural Cornwall\, Connecticut. While in New York\, he took classes at the Art Students League\, visited museums and galleries\, and continued experimenting with printmaking. He briefly studied at the Atelier 17 with Stanley Hayter (1901–1988). Hayter introduced Landeck to copper engraving and the artist quickly became fascinated with this technique. His early training as an architect supported the careful rendering of the city’s buildings and all their details. Included in the exhibit are some of Landeck’s early prints as well as his later\, architectural scenes\, like Manhattan Rooftop in the Moonlight\, created in 1980.

SUMMARY:Waterways-Lashed & Untethered
DESCRIPTION:Mo Kelman: Waterways-Lashed & Untethered\nat the Duxbury Art Complex Museum \nFebruary 15 – May 10\, 2026 \nRooted in childhood memories of Cleveland’s industrial landscape and the burning Cuyahoga River of 1969\, Mo Kelman’s sculptures merge water’s shifting forms with the stark geometry of steel and bridges. \nUsing simple\, tactile materials\, she explores the tension between nature’s unstoppable force and human engineering. These works celebrate craft\, resilience\, and transformation\, revealing both the beauty of construction and the inevitability of nature’s power.

SUMMARY:Duxbury Art Association Winter Juried Show 2026
DESCRIPTION:Duxbury Art Association\nWinter Juried Show 2026\nat the Duxbury Art Complex Museum \nFebruary 1 – April 26\, 2026\nReception: February 22\, 2026\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nThe Art Complex Museum has proudly hosted the Duxbury Art Association’s Winter Juried Show since its inception\, making it one of our most cherished and popular annual exhibitions. \nFounded in 1917\, the Duxbury Art Association (DAA) is one of the oldest arts organizations in the United States. Established by Charles Bittinger\, John Singer Sargent\, and Frank Benson\, the DAA’s mission is to support and nurture artists and to promote the visual arts within the community. \nOver the years\, the Winter Juried Show has evolved from a local exhibition\, where artists once brought their work to the museum to be juried in person\, into a national competition that attracts hundreds of submissions in all media. Jurors now select works online from across the country\, reflecting the DAA’s continued growth and broad reach. \nMonetary awards are presented in multiple categories\, including the highly regarded Best in Show and People’s Choice awards. \nTo enter the 2026 Winter Juried Show\, please visit the Duxbury Art Association’s website: www.duxburyart.org

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "20 Walks"
DESCRIPTION:Lin Lisberger:\n20 Walks\nat the Duxbury Art Complex \nNovember 15\, 2026 – February 14\, 2027\nReception: Sunday\, November 15\, 2026\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm \n\nLin Lisberger has always been interested in combining abstraction and narrative in her work. 20 Walks references the physical memory of her own walks in places at home and around the world. Each piece captures a sense of place along with the memory of a particular personal moment or sight\, evoking a recollection\, not telling all the details. This form of abstraction keeps the pieces simpler\, more elegant\, and hopefully visceral\, while always keeping form essential.

SUMMARY:Traces
DESCRIPTION:Kitty Wales: Traces\nNovember 9 – February 8\, 2026\nReception: November 9\, 2025\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nDomestic table settings\, disassembled furniture and recycled wood are the building blocks of these narrative assemblages. They contain memories that morph over time shifting in and out of the original thread\, leaving traces of the past. \nThis subject matter began in 2019 after studying Mesoamerican codices on a visit to the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City. As painted manuscripts\, they document bloodlines\, history\, science\, and sacred rituals of Mayan and Aztec rulers. Within tight frameworks\, these colorful pictorial languages are activated by symbols and characters. I loosely borrowed that format of recorded history to build beginning stages into storied landscapes. \nDiscarded objects have always been materials of choice in my work\, making use of what we leave behind.  Within each wall construction are fabricated household objects serving as historical icons\, reanimating the memories they retain. Altered purposely in their construction\, these crockeries and vessels still represent potential utility and purpose despite their misshapen appearance. \nEach piece in this series evolves through the process of making and\nexperimenting\, as I build up multiple layers of color and texture with mixed media and paper pulp. Some of these layers are visible while others are buried\, erased\, or altered to mimic the shifting nature of narrative memory.

SUMMARY:Reception for Monotype Guild of New England: 40 Years of Unique Prints
DESCRIPTION:Monotype Guild of New England:\n40 Years of Unique Prints\n(40th Anniversary Exhibit\, Sixth National Juried Exhibition)\nThrough August 31\, 2025\nReception: May 11\, 2025\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \n\nFor four decades\, the Monotype Guild of New England has championed the art of the\nmonotype and monoprint\, fostering a vibrant community of printmakers dedicated to the\nexpressive potential of one-of-a-kind prints. MGNE celebrates this milestone with\nMonotype Guild of New England: 40 Years of Unique Prints\, a national juried exhibition\nshowcasing the breadth and innovation of contemporary printmaking. \nFeaturing works from 73 artists across the United States\, this exhibition highlights the\ndynamic and ever-evolving nature of monotype—a process that embraces spontaneity\,\nexperimentation\, and individuality. Unlike traditional printmaking techniques that\nproduce multiples\, monotypes and monoprints yield singular impressions\, making each\nprint a distinctive exploration of form\, texture\, and color. This exhibition exemplifies how\ntraditional printmaking techniques can be reimagined in a contemporary context. \nInternationally acclaimed printmaker\, Karen Kunc’s expertise and artistic vision make\nher uniquely qualified as juror for this exhibition. She selected the prints in the exhibition\nfrom 645 works submitted by 238 artists. Kunc is Cather Professor Emerita of the\nUniversity of Nebraska-Lincoln where she taught from 1983-2020. Her many accolades\ninclude a Guggenheim Fellowship\, Fulbright Scholar Awards to Finland and\nBangladesh\, two NEA/MAAA awards\, and the 2007 Southern Graphics Council\nInternational Printmaker Emeritus Award.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Tom Smith: Relics - The Art Complex Museum
DESCRIPTION:May 11 – August 10\, 2025\nReception: May 11\, 2025\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nRELICS showcases biomorphic\, home-grown sculptures and derivative paintings. Grapevine\, tree\, and shrub cuttings discarded for the season are used to immerse viewers in a transformational refuge of stillness designed to restore the way we perceive Nature. \nAbstract artworks suspended above\, sprouting below\, and attaching to walls evoke plant forms that coalesce to produce a serene counterbalance to the bustle of life. As a result\, the sculptures and paintings respond to one another like living things\, compelling viewers to participate. \nRepeated patterns intrinsic to each piece invoke a sense of calm and order. Strategic placement creates shadows that enfold the gallery and viewers\, spurring curiosity and contemplation. As the show title implies\, RELICS hints at the amplitude of possibilities for resurrecting overlooked remnants while offering a new aesthetic value as art.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Sano Gofu: 50th Anniversary of Sho-fu-an
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Sano Gofu:\n50th Anniversary of Sho-fu-an\n(Wind in the Pines Tea Hut)\nThrough August 31\, 2025\nReception: May 11\, 2025\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nThis exhibit displays the paintings\, sketches\, and architectural plans created by Japanese artist and designer\, Sano Gofu. Gofu also designed the museum’s tea hut\, Wind in the Pines (Shofuan). \nGofu created numerous watercolors of botanicals and locations in Japan\, as well as painted fans\, scrolls\, and screens. A student of the famous nihonga painter SeihōTakeuchi\, Gofu graduated from the Kyoto Municipal Arts and Crafts College. He became a sumi-e painter: a Zen painting technique that focuses on nature using ink washes\, ink brush and watercolor paint. \nThrough the years\, many of these works were given to the Weyerhaeusers and the Art Complex Museum’s collection now contains more than 70 objects by Gofu. \nThe exhibit includes about half of the paintings by Sano Gofu in the collection\, as well as photographs and drawings of the tea hut\, which demonstrate his design process. A painted screen that Gofu created is on view in the Founders Room. \nMuseum co-founders Carl and Edith Weyerhaeuser became friends with many of the consultants who guided them in amassing over 8\,000 objects that make up the Art Complex Museum collection.
