DESCRIPTION:Monotype Guild of New England:\n40 Years of Unique Prints\n(40th Anniversary Exhibit\, Sixth National Juried Exhibition)\nThrough August 31\, 2025\nReception: May 11\, 2025\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \n\nFor four decades\, the Monotype Guild of New England has championed the art of the\nmonotype and monoprint\, fostering a vibrant community of printmakers dedicated to the\nexpressive potential of one-of-a-kind prints. MGNE celebrates this milestone with\nMonotype Guild of New England: 40 Years of Unique Prints\, a national juried exhibition\nshowcasing the breadth and innovation of contemporary printmaking. \nFeaturing works from 73 artists across the United States\, this exhibition highlights the\ndynamic and ever-evolving nature of monotype—a process that embraces spontaneity\,\nexperimentation\, and individuality. Unlike traditional printmaking techniques that\nproduce multiples\, monotypes and monoprints yield singular impressions\, making each\nprint a distinctive exploration of form\, texture\, and color. This exhibition exemplifies how\ntraditional printmaking techniques can be reimagined in a contemporary context. \nInternationally acclaimed printmaker\, Karen Kunc’s expertise and artistic vision make\nher uniquely qualified as juror for this exhibition. She selected the prints in the exhibition\nfrom 645 works submitted by 238 artists. Kunc is Cather Professor Emerita of the\nUniversity of Nebraska-Lincoln where she taught from 1983-2020. Her many accolades\ninclude a Guggenheim Fellowship\, Fulbright Scholar Awards to Finland and\nBangladesh\, two NEA/MAAA awards\, and the 2007 Southern Graphics Council\nInternational Printmaker Emeritus Award.

DESCRIPTION:November 10\, 2024 – February 9\, 2025\nReception: November 10\, 2024\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nNancy Hayes’ paintings speak to how her brain organizes space\, pattern\, color\, and form. Although considered abstract\, both her sculptures and paintings depict aspects of worlds unseen. Rather than an expression of frenzy\, they depict highly organized ecosystems where each part is dependent on the whole. The unity and interdependencies speak to the building blocks of matter as well as a spiritual presence that leaves us wondering. \nHayes’ work is included in the collections of the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum\, the Danforth Museum\, the Dublin School and the New Bedford Libraries as well as many private collections. SUMMARY:Hands to Work\, Hearts to God: Celebrating Mother Ann Lee’s Legacy
DESCRIPTION:September 22\, 2024 – January 12\, 2025\nReception: November 10\, 2024\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nAnn Lee (1736-1784)\, known to the Shakers as “Mother Ann\,” is the founder of the Shaker religion\, also known as the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing. She inspired thousands of followers through her philosophy of community\, equality and charity\, and her mantra\, “Hands to work\, hearts to God.” As a result of many years of religious persecution\, Mother Ann died prematurely\, 240 years ago. This exhibit explores her legacy\, and the inspiration she imparted on the women\, or “sisters\,” who lived and worked in the nineteen Shaker communities in the United States. \nObjects on view from the museum’s collection highlight industries that “sisters” were engaged in\, and are juxtaposed with works by Massachusetts artist Laura Christensen\, who interprets Mother Ann Lee’s life and work. SUMMARY:American Paintings from the Weyerhaeuser Collection
DESCRIPTION:September 22\, 2024 – January 12\, 2025\nReception: November 10\, 2024\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nCollecting American paintings was an adventure in art appreciation for the Weyerhaeuser family. Interest in American paintings was fostered by museum co-founders Carl and Edith Weyerhaeuser and went back several generations. The collection came to encompass canvases from important phases in American landscape painting as well as other genres. \nAmong the holdings are works by Hudson River School painters: Albert Bierstadt and Jasper Francis Cropsey; American Impressionists: Childe Hassam\, Dennis Miller Bunker\, and John Singer Sargent\, as well as paintings by George Bellows\, a devoted member of the Ashcan School who helped to organize the 1913 Armory Show. DESCRIPTION:Industrial Beauty—Luminous Desert\nJürgen Robert and Lisa Ryan\nAugust 18 – November 3\, 2024\nReception: September 15\, 2024\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm \nLisa and Jürgen demonstrate that industrial views\, which are typically ugly\, polluting\, noisy and dehumanizing\, can appear more like a tourist attraction at night. Night photography is transformational and nowhere is that seen more prominently than in Industrial Beauty. Colorful lights sculpt shapes and shadows\, creating shimmering reflections or glowing clouds. \nIn the Luminous Desert series\, layers of light sculpt and paint the city scenes and natural landscapes. These images are about creating an experience rather than documenting a place. The works are also opposites: human-made city scapes versus nature\, color vs. black and white\, warm vs. cold. \nWhile there are other contrasting aspects to these two bodies of work\, the artists chose to focus on the difference in the quality of light. SUMMARY:Serigraphs by Edward Landon
DESCRIPTION:February 4 – April 14\, 2024\nReception: February 18\, 2024\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nConsidered one of the pioneers of serigraph or silk screen printing\, American artist Edward Landon (1911-1984) was among the founding members of the Silk Screen Group which later became the National Serigraph Society. The group exhibited internationally\, to highlight the creative possibilities of the medium. Landon exhibited at the Art Complex Museum in 1981\, and gave the museum one of his prints\, Land’s End\, at the close of the exhibit.  At two later dates\, more of his work came into the museum from a generous family member’s collection. \nSilk Screen printing was initially used only commercially when these experimental artists began using it to create fine art. Carl Zigrosser (1891-1975)\, curator for the Philadelphia Art Museum\, coined the term “serigraph” in order to differentiate between the commercial and fine art use of the printing process. “Seri” is a Latin word meaning “silk” and “graphos” is a Greek word meaning “to write.” \nShown: Edward Landon\, Web II\, (Detail)\, 1960\, serigraph

SUMMARY:Palindrome: Back to Hope by Andrae Green
DESCRIPTION:Growing up on the island of Jamaica\, Massachusetts painter Andrae Green says that the Caribbean Sea never played a huge part in his conscious life\, but he was always aware of its presence. He knew\, unconsciously\, that he could go to it whenever he wanted and that it would always be there for him. He remembers his father bringing his family to Kingston Harbor and watching the young boys jump off the docks\, into the abyss. Their fearless trust in the sea always fascinated him. Their leaps of faith inspired him. \nSince moving to western Massachusetts and no longer having easy access to the sea\, Green feels a longing that has translated into his most recent body of work: paintings that speak to the limitless potential for human imagination and freedom (a perspective that is very needed in these times) and drawings about weightlessness and freedom\, all inspired by bodies of water and the Caribbean landscape. SUMMARY:Duxbury Art Complex presents "TAG"
DESCRIPTION:TAG: Contemporary Painters\n\nApril 2 – August 27\, 2023\nReception: May 21\, 2023\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm \nFor this exhibition\, we began by asking artist Carol O’Malia to be in the show. She then asked another painter to be in the show. That painter then chose another painter\, etc. Hence the name “Tag.”  The artists picked friends\, studio mates\, former classmates\, and other artists whose work they admired. Like a game of tag there were not many rules\, other than being based in New England\, and even that rule was bent. \nThe result is an organically grown exhibition with a wide-ranging view.  Artists in the exhibition include Angela Godoy\, Kevin Kearns\, Chil Mott\, Richard Neal\, Carol O’Malia\, Tula Telfair\, Peter Waite\, and Gina Volpe. \nShown: Chil Mott\, Untitled #17\, from the Sill Life series\, 2018\, oil on board
