Inside the Frame Podcast Ep. 64: Page Railsback on Art, Community & Letting Go

For decades, Page Railsback has been a steady, creative force in the South Shore art community. In Episode 64 of Inside the Frame Podcast, Page sits down with host Dave to reflect on a life shaped by curiosity, generosity, and an ever-evolving relationship with art.

What unfolds is less a formal interview and more a conversation between two people deeply rooted in the same creative ecosystem. One that values process just as much as finished work.

Discovering Art by Accident

Page’s artistic journey didn’t begin in art school or a studio. It began during quiet moments at home after the birth of her daughter. A former special education teacher, Page found herself wondering how to fill her time during nap hours. Almost on a whim, she took a small pastel class at a local artist’s home.

That first piece, a simple study of flowers, opened a door she hadn’t known existed.

“I couldn’t believe you could do something like that,” she recalls. From there, one class turned into many, and curiosity turned into devotion. Pastels led to watercolor, which in turn led to acrylics, collage, and beyond. Page became, and remains, a lifelong student of art.

Mentors, Teachers, and Finding Your Voice

Throughout the episode, Page speaks warmly about the artists who shaped her path, especially the late Roz Raskin, a mentor known for her bold color and direct critiques. Roz encouraged Page to paint fearlessly, embrace color, and abandon the idea of perfection.

“She didn’t use black,” Page laughs. “She’d say, ‘Put some pink in it. Put some purple in it.’”

These lessons weren’t just technical. They were philosophical. They taught Page how to trust herself, to experiment, and to understand that growth often comes from mistakes.

A Life Immersed in Art

Over the years, Page’s art life has expanded far beyond her own studio. She has taught for more than 15 years, curated and hung shows at the James Library & Center for the Arts, helped found the Hingham Arts Walk, and shared studio spaces with fellow artists.

Teaching, for Page, is as rewarding as painting.

“I love to share everything I’ve learned,” she says. “We’re all students. We’re all teachers.”

Her studio practice reflects the same openness, large-scale canvases, layers of paint over older works, and a willingness to let accidents lead the way.

Mexico, Movement, and Making Space

Page also spends significant time painting in Mexico, where color, abstraction, and community take center stage. Painting on raw canvas allows her to roll up finished work and carry it home, a fitting metaphor for her approach to art itself: create, release, move forward.

One of the episode’s most resonant themes is Page’s philosophy on letting go.

“Don’t be attached,” she says. “Let it go and try to do something just as good or better.”

It’s advice she applies not only to painting, but to collecting, teaching, and living.

Art as a Way of Life

From handmade pottery and textiles to thoughtfully arranged living spaces, Page sees art everywhere— in food, gardens, and daily rituals. Keeping things simple, intentional, and beautiful is central to her practice, shaped in part by her background in yoga and healing arts.

Her story is a reminder that art isn’t confined to galleries or frames. It’s woven into how we move through the world.

A Community Worth Celebrating

As the conversation circles back to the South Shore, Page reflects on just how fortunate the region is. With organizations like North River Arts, the James Library, and countless local galleries, the area continues to nurture artists at every stage.

“These places gave me my legs and my wings,” she says.
