In the latest episode of Inside the Frame, Frame Center’s podcast exploring the world of art, host Dave sits down with photographer and gallery owner Kjeld Mahoney. Known for his innovative approach to photography and his dedication to the local art community, Kjeld shares his journey, insights, and what drives his passion for making photography a one-of-a-kind experience.
Reinventing Photography as Unique Art
Kjeld has always been fascinated by how photography, often seen as a reproducible medium, can be transformed into something entirely unique. His solution? Presenting his images on reclaimed wood, metal, and other distinctive surfaces to create one-of-a-kind pieces.
“I love finding old vintage wood panels and matching the print to the color and texture of the wood,” Kjeld explains. “Each piece has its own history, and no two will ever be exactly alike.”
This method not only enhances the individuality of his work but also brings a sculptural quality to his photography, making each piece feel special to its owner.
The Evolution of Afterglow Gallery
For years, Kjeld was a familiar name in the South Shore art scene, having run galleries in various locations, including Kennedy’s in Scituate. His latest endeavor, Afterglow Gallery, is now located at Roht Marine, a scenic waterfront space that perfectly complements his work.
“The new location is amazing,” he says. “You walk out back, and you’ve got boats, water, the sky—it’s the perfect setting for my work. We’re still working on getting people familiar with the space, but once they find us, they love it.”
Afterglow Gallery has become a hub for not only Kjeld’s photography but also a curated selection of work from other talented artists. The gallery regularly hosts themed exhibitions, bringing the community together to celebrate art in a relaxed, inviting environment.
Community, Creativity, and Themed Exhibitions
One of the things that sets Afterglow apart is its rotating themed exhibitions, which allow both emerging and established artists to showcase their work in new and exciting ways. Past exhibitions have included Jaws-Inspired Art, In the Heart of the Sea, and the upcoming Ireland show, scheduled for March 15.
“These themes give artists a chance to stretch creatively and find unique ways to interpret a subject,” Kjeld says. “I love when artists take it in unexpected directions.”
Beyond showcasing visual art, these events have become social gatherings, complete with food, drinks, and live music. Thanks to partnerships with caterers like El Jarvis, attendees enjoy a full sensory experience while connecting with artists and fellow collectors.
Art That Tells a Story
Much like the way he presents his own work, Kjeld believes that every piece of art has a story. Whether it’s a painting, a sculpture, or a photograph, there’s a narrative behind its creation—and its journey into someone’s home.
“I want people to feel comfortable walking into the gallery, even if they’re just browsing,” he says. “There’s no pressure here. The right piece will find you when it’s meant to.”
For Kjeld, the goal isn’t just to sell art but to create a space where people can connect with it. Whether it’s helping a new collector find their first piece or working with seasoned buyers to expand their collection, Afterglow Gallery is all about fostering those relationships.
Looking Ahead
As Kjeld continues to evolve Afterglow Gallery, he remains focused on building a vibrant, supportive art community. From collaborating with local publications like South Shore Living to mentoring emerging artists, he’s always looking for ways to contribute to the creative ecosystem.
And with big plans on the horizon—including a Universal Monsters-Inspired Show—there’s no doubt that Kjeld will continue to push boundaries and bring fresh, exciting art experiences to the South Shore.
