Beneath the Surface
Beneath the Surface: Artists and NSRWA Reveal the True Nature of Our Waters
October 11 – November 13, 2026
From the scenic banks of the North and South Rivers, the water may appear calm
and untouched, but beneath the surface lies a story of environmental stress and
resilience. This exhibition brings together diverse artistic perspectives to explore
the hidden challenges facing South Shore waterways, including historic mill dams,
declining water quality, reduced water quantity, and the effects of climate
change.
The works reveal how dams fragment rivers and block fish migration, how human
demand and impervious surfaces strain groundwater, and how runoff and
bacterial spikes can harm shellfish beds and stream health. In partnership with
the North and South Rivers Watershed Association, the exhibition invites viewers
to look more closely at the waters we depend on and consider the collective
action needed to restore them.
