The symmetry between the two dories and the inlets of water behind create a sense of cohesion between the foreground and background. However, the the boats are bobbing in the warm glow of sunset while the land behind is draped in shadow from the tree-line. This contrast between light and dark creates a very balanced composition, and the way the water clearly frames both along the horizontal axis is brilliant.
