Dennis Doyle
Plein Air Painter
From Weymouth, MA
“Painting in plein air you stand before what matters.”
– Dennis Doyle
Dennis Doyle is a plein air painter and lifelong Weymouth resident whose work lives on the tidal edges of the South Shore: the mudflats, coves and marshes of Bare Cove, Whale Island and the Webb. A licensed merchant mariner, Dennis works tugboats along the coast from Maine to Louisiana and keeps a paint kit aboard to catch the light as it passes.
He studied at Massachusetts College of Art, paying his tuition digging clams on the flats of Weymouth, Hingham and Hull and fishing lobster and gill nets on Stellwagen Bank. Painting on location in oil, Dennis captures the water the way only someone who has worked it all his life can.
His newest series, on view at Frame Center, was painted during Sail Boston 2026, when tall ships from around the world filled Boston Harbor. In it he paints Germany’s Gorch Fock, Italy’s Amerigo Vespucci, Argentina’s Libertad and the Dominican Republic’s Juan Bautista Cambiaso at dawn, in morning light and under sail in the Parade of Ships.
“I’m a water-man by trade, with a passion for paint.”
